Comparison is the Killer of Creativity

***CAUTION: REAL TALK ABOUT TO COMMENCE*** Have you ever heard the phrase "Don't compare your blooper reel to someone else's highlight reel?" One of the hardest things in my business and in my life I've had to deal with (and I all think we can all relate to this social media centric world) is comparing myself to others. As a graphic designer, this can be especially staunching when it comes to creativity and the willingness to just let go and try new things. When I first started my business all the way to now (five years later) I've constantly found myself comparing my designs to other creators' content. I put myself down by saying things to myself like "Their work is so much better than mine," or "I'll never be as good as them." I had to teach myself how to design and use Adobe programs. The progress I've made since I first started years ago to the designs I make now show tremendous progress. So why couldn't I be as good as other designers? But you know, I've recently come to realize the truth. I may never be as good as some designers - and that's okay. I know I'm good at what I do, and that confidence to stop comparing myself to others has led me to let my creative juices flow more freely than ever before. So here's my little tidbit of wisdom to share my fellow freelancers just starting out (or just anybody who frequently compares themselves to others) - you are good enough. Even if you don't think you are, know that you are. Who knows - someone else might even be comparing their blooper reel to your highlight reel.
